It hasn't always been easy, but we are fans to say the least...not "fair weather fans" and we are not "bandwagon" fans. We will still be fans when times get tough again, as I'm sure they will. But for now, it's fun. With all the tiresome news in politics, insane violence in the streets, endless economic woes, weather ravaged areas trying to recover...we need these things to divert our attention for a while.
After last night's win over the Cowboys, I for one am still basking in the euphoric afterglow of a glorious super high-scoring game full of surprises and excitement. Dan had to leave for work near halftime, so I was left to pace the floor and yell and scream at the tv with Molly laughing at me and Lizzie pouncing on me each time I jumped. I think she thought I was in distress...she was nearly right, as that game almost gave me a heart attack.
That was the 4th highest scoring game in the history of the NFL and Peyton Manning's first rushing touchdown in 5 years. That touchdown even surprised the camera operators who had him completely out of the expected shot. It was awesome.
After so many years of bleak disappointment, the pendulum is showing us mercy by finally swinging our way and for these few years that we have our man, we're going to soak up the energy and enjoy it because it can't last for long. Such is life.
Here are Dan and Molly last week. We got out some of our Bronco gear out for Molly to lay on or play with during the game against the Eagles. We also had lots of football watching food such as buffalo wings, corn chips, potato chips, salsa, queso, guacamole, broccoli, carrot & celery sticks. You should have been here.
She's learning the game and says things like: "Look Daddy, they're in the red zone." Yeah, I didn't know what the red zone was until ... well, this year? I don't know. Hey, I'm figuring out downs at long last....give me some credit here. I used to just watch football like this: "These guys want to go to this end zone and the other ones want to go to that other end zone. I like this team and if they have more points when all the confusion is over, they win."
Thank goodness for the brilliant invention of the lines marking the field for scrimmage, downs....they make it so much easier for me to follow what's happening. Sure makes the game more interesting when you understand the rules better. Oh yeah, AND when Peyton Manning is your quarterback!!
We are loving watching the Broncos play this year. For the last 3 years or so, it's been a wild ride being a fan with Tebow-mania, losing him, getting Manning, wondering if he's back in top form after 4 neck surgeries, heck yeah he is, wondering if he's too old, heck no he's not, and now we're winning. Plus living here in Knoxville which still pays homage to their beloved former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback...Mr. Manning is big time around here too. Want to go to church? Go to Neyland Stadium where you may pray to his likeness on nearly every wall and window.
We are often asked if we are fans since he was a Vol before going pro. To which we say, "no, we're long time fans since long before we ever heard of the man." Dan says since he was very little, I say since 1983 when we moved to Denver during the Elway Days of Glory. I believe Peyton was 7 at the time.
Here's a curious thought to mull over: I think he was meant to wear orange again and play for two pro teams with horse mascots.
Interesting? Yes. But I think about football just like a girl.
